Hey Everyone, its Annabel! March just hit and I couldn’t be more excited because that means it’s my birthday month! And despite making a huge fuss over my own birthday every year, I am always confronted with the two week spell of racking my brain to come up with my next celebration idea. If, like me, you’ve been in NYC your whole life, or even just longer than 5 years, chances are you’ve probably spent a few of your birthdays having a nice dinner followed by a night out at the clubs. Hey, it’s one of the many reasons New York is so great - good food, great nightlife. But if, also like me, you’re looking to change it up and make your birthday celebrations a tad more… elegant, we’ll say… here are some of my favorite birthday ideas for you to make your own!
Weekend Away
Sooo… we’re starting off BIG! A weekend away with my significant other or a close group of friends (or both) is my favorite way to celebrate my birthday. This year I had my eye on Marrakech - think dinners in the desert, shopping in the souk and cocktails under the columns. Miami, Bahamas and St Barths are also perfect places for a birthday weekend away.
Custom Comedy
Instead of your run-of-the-mill dinner at your favorite local restaurant, why not add a twist? Hire a professional comedian to come entertain you and your guests in the middle of dinner. A restaurant’s private room, your home or even a bar is the perfect set up for this idea and will create some very funny memories. Better yet, if you have a funny crew, let them partake in the act by creating “roast jokes” at your expense!
Maybe It’s Magic!
Magic is definitely not just for kids (fun fact: I’m actually obsessed with it!). Shock and wow your guests with a surprise illusionist, mind reader or magician at your party. Your performer can appear in various settings, though a cocktail party or lunch/dinner would be the perfect place.
Perfect Partnership
Instead of gathering all your friends to a restaurant and then shuffling them across town to a nightclub, take a look at some of the restaurants that have their own after hour scene. Omar’s and more recently, Her Name Was Carmen are two of my favorites for a night like this. Start out with a chic dinner surrounded by beautiful decor, and as dessert approaches and the booze starts to kick in, feel free to get on up and have a twirl amongst the many dancing diners.
